Most people do not quit canasta because it is too hard. They quit because nobody warned them about the same handful of mistakes that wreck a first game. I wrote these down after years of watching beginners lose rounds they should have won. Fix these seven and you are already ahead of most people at the table.

A taste of what is on the sheet:

  • The Talon: after your opening meld you are owed 4 extra cards (3 if your team opens second), and the exact words to say so the table cannot quietly skip them.
  • The opening-meld trap: keep your meld face down until you are certain you have hit the 125 / 155 / 180 requirement, then flip only when you are sure.
  • The "smart" habit that silently kills your chance of ever taking the discard pile (stop laying down every pair you get).
  • The two ranks you have to keep counting all game, plus the safe-discard rule that stops you from handing opponents the pile.

One page. Print it, stick it with your set, settle the next argument at the table.
